3G Home: A Timeless Heirloom of Singaporean Architecture

Kelvin Bing's Redesign Merges Modernity with Heritage

In the heart of Singapore, Kelvin Bing's 3G Home stands as a testament to architectural innovation, sustainability, and the preservation of cultural heritage. This award-winning residential house redefines the essence of contemporary living in a land-scarce city.

3G Home, conceptualized by Kelvin Bing, is not just a structure; it is a legacy cast in the urban fabric of Singapore. The design's inspiration stems from the pursuit of timeless elegance, with a white façade that not only serves aesthetic purposes but also contributes to the building's thermal efficiency. The interplay of light and shadow on this blank canvas creates a dynamic visual symphony, while the choice of color reflects a practical approach to the tropical climate.

What sets 3G Home apart is its commitment to upholding the value of freehold landed property in Singapore. Bing faced the challenge of maintaining the integrity of the existing structure while infusing it with a new architectural identity. The result is a seamless blend of modern sophistication and enduring charm, achieved through the strategic use of sustainable materials and design elements that minimize maintenance costs and enhance the living experience.

The technological prowess of 3G Home is evident in its construction details. The replacement of old roof tiles with a steel roof featuring skylights is a masterstroke in design. These skylights are treated to block out a significant portion of the heat while illuminating the home's core. The master bedroom's balcony, shaded by a powder-coated steel screen, offers both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits, allowing residents to enjoy the outdoors without the harshness of the sun.

With a site area of 185.70 square meters, the addition of a third story to the existing two-story terrace house enhances the spatial dynamics without compromising natural light or ventilation. The strategic placement of windows, double-volume spaces, and skylights ensures that even with the new level, the home remains airy and bright. This design consideration maintains the building's scale in harmony with its neighbors, respecting the community's architectural landscape.

The project's underlying research emphasizes sustainability. By repurposing existing structures, Bing's design significantly reduces waste and carbon emissions associated with new construction. This approach not only conserves resources but also aligns with a global movement towards environmentally responsible urban development. The 3G Home project, from its inception in October 2021 to its completion in December 2022, has been a journey of overcoming creative and technical challenges to achieve a multi-generational living space that respects both the past and the future.

3G Home's recognition with the Iron A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2024 is a testament to Kelvin Bing's dedication to design excellence. The award acknowledges the project's practicality, innovation, and integration of industry best practices. As a beacon of modern architecture, 3G Home stands proudly, embodying the aspirations of a city that values both its heritage and its progress.
